Sacramento’s Eden

Sacramento’s Eden

(When visiting California’s state capital
walking up the sidewalk towards the capital
I looked to the left to see. . .)

see over here, here
where soft shadows of morning
float over the silvery wet grass
tall sun-lit trees line a vestibule
where you kneel, stretch out your arms
then bring your hands together

touch fingertip to fingertip.
Here, you pray with your eyes open
in one call to heaven and hell
light and shadows, sin and grace,
all mingle to murmur their vows as
the air waves incense of forgiveness;

Hunch-backed in their green vestments
bushes listen;  the asian pear tree offers
one apple; you hear the “thud,”
you turn, expecting to see god.
