The Cure

When sleep’s a rock under your back
and your bed stabs you with
porcupine quills
forget about it and
go back to sleep.

Wake up! It’s the crack of dawn —
throw back the covers, step onto the icy floor
dress immediately, wash up then sweep the snow
get the bird feeder out there, make the coffee
and stop that damn groaning.

Now sit your butt down at the table
throw all the bills in the wastebasket
eat apple pie with that coffee
cancel your newspaper, turn off
the computer, pack your suitcase and

Aim your car for a beach town.
Tell ’em your taking The Cure.
