The Real Superbowl

(Ten minute “weighted workout” exercise
with words which I’ll probably re-write 16 times)

Because you know how it is when
the shell of heaven cracks open and
ten seconds count down to  that first catch
of egg yolk sun peeking bright-eyed light
                 suit up

And your open-eyed prayers to face the sun
feel the orgasm of breath and heartbeat
sublime you to a new holy communion
with yourself and the world opening the
roaring stadium of this day
                yeah, kick off

And more, you know you’ll plow through laundry,
bills to pay, friends called, business, wood chopped,
pasta wine cake and the joy of her smiling hello when you call
your 95-year-old mother and thank her for
your birth and 4,795 washed and cleaned clothes
                extra yardage, yeah,
                see the goal posts

Charging thru the days, weeks, years, a seemingly
clear field ahead to the end zone but you hope,
someone, will tackle you, so you can have at least
one more great play before you cross the goal line
and stripe-shirted St. peter raises his arms
               at sundown.
               because, you know. . .
