In Every Crowd

Despite the cold and snow
20 robins rim the lip of the heated fountain
they dip and sip, dip and sip and in the tree
above them, 20 or so more robins await
their turn. At the sunflower seed feeder
the finches and chickadees break bread together.
But, in that aspen tree by the driveway,
what is it, oh, a sparrow hawk, awaiting
a chance for birdie on the bone.
One in every crowd.
