Who In Their Right Mind

Who In Their Right Mind
Dec. 1, 2011, Below Freezing

Clouds hide the milky way’s stars.
Why would anyone in their right mind
awaken at 4 am, turn on
the porch light, to watch December’s
first snowflakes swirling —

Look, footprints in the snow.
Who in their right mind, shivering,
at 7:30, carries a bucket of water
to the heated bird fountain
so the wintering robins can drink —

Bare-branched trees point skyward.
Who in their right mind awaits
the noonday sun to peak through to
remind himself, we are not the center
of this universe.

Who in their right mind, indeed. You that’s who. And strangely, I too was up at 4 am to watch our first snow turn to rain and back again to snow. Though it is all water just the same. . .the heated drops in the bird feeder–the flakes drifting through the trees–the drops that scatter the walk like rain–the beauty is in the watching, the feeling of change, the knowing it all is the same.
